CONSTRUCTION TEAM - CASE STUDY

Lampier was recently invited to assist with the insurance programme of a firm of Electrical Contractors based in Wiltshire.

After an initial meeting it was noted that the firm was originally established in 1972 and had grown steadily over the years including the takeover of two smaller firms based at separate locations. Basically the firm had used the services of a local broker for many years but now considered that:

  • the service received was not now appropriate to their needs
  • the premiums being paid were too high (particularly in respect of Motor Insurance)
  • their cover needed to be improved as they had recently been unsuccessful in obtaining a large contract because their insurances were not deemed adequate

At the initial meeting details of the current insurance portfolio were obtained and a Contractors' Fact Find completed. The insurances all fell due for renewal early in the following year therefore the firm were committed to the current insurers for several months.

Lampier then produced a Concept Report, entirely free of charge which was discussed with the directors of the firm at a subsequent meeting. The report demonstrated the level of service which would be provided, the risks which the company was currently running which were not presently insured and various risk management systems which may be appropriate in reducing or eliminating risk and hence a reduction in premiums payable.

The company agreed to appoint Lampier with immediate effect. Further information gathering following including:

o obtaining full breakdowns of the claims experience from insurers
o attending meetings with management to obtain a better understanding of the business profile
o surveys at each location
o site visits to review Health & Safety procedures and investigate typical contract documents

A new insurance programme was then presented to the firm which was approved and put in place with effect from renewal date.

The new programme was considerably cheaper than the company had paid in the previous year but the following covers had been added:

 Directors' & Officers' Liability
 Financial Loss
 Professional Indemnity

The Motor Fleet had produced a poor claims experience but this included several incidents of minor own damage and the company had a beneficial relationship with a local body shop. The insurers offered a £5,000 premium reduction in return for an increase in the Accidental Damage excess from £250 per claim to £1,000 per claim. In actual fact if the claims experience had been repeated in future years the additional excesses would have only cost them £3,750 with the potential for some recoveries from third party insurers. It was also identified that three drivers had had two or more accidents in the last year and have now agreed to undertake driver training.

Lampier also implemented a system to assist the company maintain their records on the Motor Insurance Database.

Under the Material Damage Insurance it was pointed out that the firm were invalidating the terms of cover by not keeping copies of computer back up tapes away from the premises. A suitable procedure was subsequently introduced.

Under the Combined Liability Insurance the cover was replaced in a specialist market for the trade. Furthermore a system was put in place to check the insurances of sub contractors. This is soon to be replaced by Lampier's new "Toolbox" facility which enables the company to maintain their records on line and receive timely reminders by e-mail when a particular sub-contractors insurances are due for renewal.
